How Many Grafts Do You Really Need?
If you’ve researched hair transplants, you’ll have seen clinics advertising increasingly large graft numbers. But more grafts don’t necessarily mean a better transplant.
The important questions are: How many follicular units can be safely taken from your donor area? How many hairs will actually grow? And how should those hairs be distributed to create natural-looking density?

Your donor hair is limited.
A man with male pattern hair loss typically has around 5,000–6,000 follicular units available for transplantation over his lifetime; for women with female pattern hair loss, it is around 4,000. Each follicular unit contains an average of approximately 2.2 hairs.
That makes donor hair a finite resource — and it needs to be protected.
Taking too many grafts in one FUE procedure can damage the donor area and its blood supply, potentially causing permanent thinning, a see-through appearance or, in severe cases, skin necrosis.
Safe harvesting depends on your individual donor density, the size of the FUE punch and, critically, leaving sufficient space between extractions.
Density isn’t about cramming in grafts
Natural hair averages around 70 follicular units per cm², but you generally don’t notice hair loss until density has fallen substantially.
That means a transplant doesn’t need to recreate your original density. Around 25 - 30 follicular units per cm², intelligently placed, can create the appearance of density.
Trying to pack grafts too closely can compromise blood supply and potentially damage both transplanted and existing hair. It can also make the scalp look and feel “bumpy”.

The number of grafts you need depends on how much hair you’ve lost, what you want to achieve and how your hair loss is likely to progress.
